Our client, a mission-driven college preparatory school in Dallas, is seeking a curious, growth-oriented, and values-based financial leader to join its leadership team. Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Finance will serve as a strategic and hands-on steward of the school’s financial and administrative operations. This position oversees all aspects of finance, accounting, forecasting, budgeting, HR, legal compliance, and risk management in support of the school’s long-term sustainability and mission.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Business Operations
- Establishes and maintains accounting standards, internal controls, and financial procedures consistent with GAAP and applicable tax laws.
- Regularly updates and enforces policies that ensure sound fiscal management and operational efficiency.
- Oversees the day-to-day business office functions and supervises accounting staff.
- Manages tuition billing, accounts receivable, and payments related to the school’s Corporate Work Study partnerships.
- Leads the preparation of the annual operating budget and multi-year financial forecasts in collaboration with the leadership team.
- Presents financial results and projections to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Oversees all accounting processes, including month-end and year-end close, audits, tax filings (Form 990), and financial reporting.
- Monitors cash flow, reviews disbursements, and ensures financial accuracy in all transactions.
- Reviews contracts and agreements to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance.
- Partners with the Development Office to manage grant funds and ensure proper tracking of restricted contributions.
- Serves as liaison to the Board on financial matters, providing regular updates and insights.
- Coordinates the annual audit process and presents audited financials to the Board.
Human Resources Leadership
- Oversees payroll operations, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance.
- Partners with the school’s HR services provider to refine and maintain HR policies and procedures.
- Reviews employee benefits and retirement plans to ensure competitiveness and fiscal responsibility.
- Leads open enrollment and educates staff on benefits offerings.
- Maintains personnel records and updates the employee handbook annually.
- Advises leadership on employment regulations and compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws.
Risk & Compliance Oversight
- Manages the school’s insurance portfolio, ensuring adequate property, liability, and other coverage in coordination with the school’s insurance provider.
- Reviews contracts and agreements in partnership with legal counsel to safeguard the school’s interests.
- Ensures adherence to the organization’s document retention and risk management policies.
Additional Responsibilities
- Keeps current with emerging accounting standards, tax law changes, and best practices through professional development and training.
- Completes special assignments and other projects as directed by the President.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.
- CPA credential or eligibility strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in a nonprofit, education, or mission-based organization is advantageous.
- Strong communication and analytical skills; detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- High degree of accountability and integrity; proactive problem solver with a collaborative mindset.
- Skilled in QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and Google Workspace.
