East Dallas/Richardson area client is seeking a Payroll Accountant to join their team on a contract-to-hire basis.
Keys:
- Bachelors in Accounting or Finance strongly preferred
- Payroll accounting experience required (NOT payroll processing)
- Payroll subledger reconciliation experience
Position Summary
The Payroll Accountant is responsible for managing and reconciling all aspects of payroll accounts for district and campus employees. This position ensures timely and accurate payroll compliance with state and federal regulations; and the reconciliation of all payroll liability accounts, including TRS, HSA, FICA/MEDI, and group healthcare. The Payroll Accountant serves as a key member of the Finance Department, maintaining fiscal integrity and supporting the organization’s mission through precise financial management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Payroll Liabilities & Account Reconciliations:
• Perform monthly reconciliations of all payroll-related liability accounts, including but not limited to: Payroll clearing account, Accrued wages, TRS, HSA, FICA/MEDI, and Group healthcare.
• Prepare and submit payments and reports for payroll-related liabilities to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
• Collaborate with the Finance team to ensure all payroll-related journal entries are properly recorded in the General Ledger.
• Research and resolve discrepancies in payroll or liability accounts promptly.
Reporting & Compliance:
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reports for TRS, IRS, and other agencies as required.
• Assist with financial audits and provide supporting payroll documentation.
• Support the preparation of annual budget projections for salaries and benefits.
• Maintain accurate employee payroll records in compliance with record retention policies.Collaboration & Support:
• Work closely with HR, Accounting, Benefits and Campus Administration to address payroll-related inquiries.
• Provide training and guidance to staff regarding payroll timelines, deductions, and reporting procedures.
• Recommend process improvements to enhance payroll accuracy and efficiency.Qualifications
Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in payroll accounting or related finance function.
• Experience with school district or charter school payroll preferred.
• Proficiency in Skyward Financial Management, ADP, or similar ERP/payroll systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Comprehensive understanding of payroll laws, accounting principles, and benefit deductions.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to reconcile complex accounts and resolve discrepancies independently.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial reporting tools.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills to meet recurring deadlines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a service-oriented mindset.
• High degree of integrity and discretion in handling confidential financial data.
